East Bluff recommended for 100 Homes program

I wanted to take a moment and update progress on the 100 Homes program. The design committee has recommended the East Bluff neighborhood as the area for our first year. The neighborhood designated the area from Locust South to 14th and from Perry East to Carey. A number of criteria were reviewed for the recommendation. The selection is before the council for final approval next week.

The 100 Homes program offers forgivable loans ($15,000) to persons from any income bracket for home improvements on new purchases in the selected area. I hope all goes well in the first year and we can move forward with a solid effort with existing projects in this area and with the neighborhood association. To learn more: click here and go to pages 3-4 of the PDF.

I would like to thank the lending institutions that helped to provide funding, the committee volunteers, and my colleagues for their support of this new project. I hope this will be one component that helps us build better neighborhoods in the future.

Ian - what makes you think that anyone would risk it all for $15K to move into such a high crime area? What are you thinking?

11:11 -

This is one component of building a better neighborhood. We need to move forward with other efforts concurrently to ensure success for this program, including crime prevention and pro-active policing. I will advocate for this as well.

This model has worked well in Des Moines for over 15 years and has resulted in reduced crime and re-investment in their central city. The model has a proven track record of success and I believe this is one piece of the puzzle that can help turn a given neighborhood in the right direction. The Des Moines program has resulted in over $130-Million of re-investment in their existing neighborhoods. This is merely a first step.

I am on the committee with Ian. Realizing of course that this is the first year of the program there probably are still some kinks to iron out, but at least it's an idea to do something about a problem. Ian has been at nearly every meeting, and has dedicated himself to this program. I think the residents of Davenport need to at the very least Thank Ian for the effort, worse case scenario - it doesn't work well as designed and needs some changes to be effective, at least it was attempted. I think it is the first new housing program in the city to assist with bringing over income people into low income areas in years. Is there any other alderperson who proposed any remedy for the current housing programs in the city? Ian, I personally thank you and have been honored to serve along side you this past 15 months!

Sounds interesting. I'm curious to see how well it works. Glad to see people thinking outside the norm.

Dear Anonymous Posting #1
I live in the East Bluff area for almost 7 years as a homeowner who takes care of my property.
The preceived crime and the actual crime are not one in the same. It is safer than the middle class and media would lead one to believe.

The blogger who made the comment asking why anyone would risk it all for $15K is an example of the againsters in this city that show up for nothing and put down everything. They never try to come up with an answer, they only critize.
Thanks Ian for all the hard work you do for this city, and good luck in the up comming election. We need more people like you on this council. We need people with vision.
