A few items of note ....

ADLER RE-OPENING NOV. 2ND
The Adler Theatre will re-open tomorrow (Nov. 2nd) with a free public open house from 5-7 pm. The event coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the venue. The mayor will speak, along with performances by QC Ballet, QC Opera, and the QC Symphony. The Broadway season opens Sat. (Nov. 4) with Joseph. Additional info: call 326-8500 or visit the website at www.adlertheatre.com. A press release on the opening event: click here.

NEIGHBORHOOD FINANCE MEETING
A meeting, open to the public, to discuss the neighborhood finance proposal is set for 7 pm, Nov. 8th, at United Neighbors. Bruce Berger, Paul Fessler, Ald. Howard, and others will join me at the meeting. If you are unable to attend and wish to discuss this issue, feel free to call me at 508-2842 or send email to ian@ianfrink.com. More info on the program: click here.

LIBRARY PRESENTS CHECK
Thanks to the Friends of the Davenport Public Library and to the Library Board for their check of $941k. The check covers the commitment to help fund the Fairmount Library. The two entities have pledged to offer similar funding for the Eastern Avenue Library.

GOOSE CREEK HTS. NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN UP
Thanks to the Goose Creek Heights Neighborhood Association and the other volunteers that came out, on Nov. 4th, for the fall clean up. I would estimate 30 or some participants; special thanks to Public Works and NETS officers for their assistance. This is a neighborhood that is turning a corner, thanks to an active neighborhood association, a reduction in crime, and due to an effort to re-market itself. It is great to see; hopefully we can have similar efforts in other areas of town.

Ian: I am not sure about my opinionon your plan, but one thing about public input youshould understand. Paul Fessler and United Neighbors are not the current active voice of the neighborhoods here solo. You need to understand that a few years ago, United Neighbors had a falling out the most of the neighborhood groups and many do not support UN anymore. They seem to ofer low income services and only support the low income segment of the solo. You need to diversify your panel and ask some other reps to the table from the solo neighborhood groups. There are many middlie income folks who are interested in giving input on this and who know what they are speaking of. The goldcoast comes to mind and others.

Thanks, and what is your position on the DOC?

Anon. 2:13,

Thanks for the post. The meeting is at United Neighbors, but the meeting is open to anyone throughout the community and no hard-set agenda is in place. Bruce Berger, from the city, and I will be there, along with a few others. We will be listening, more than anything else, to various perspectives from those in attendance. This is more of a public meeting than anything else.

One reason, the NFC model (from Des Moines) is attractive to me, because it opens up the re-hab. financing to all income levels and supports economic diversity in neighborhoods.

I have serious reservations about the halfway house move to the area just South of the Gold Coast. I would like to think another location, or Plan B option, could be considered. I had hoped to attend the meetings at JLC last week, but had conflicts both times.

What happened at RME, Ian. As a board member what role did you play in making this music venue work? Are changes on the board needed? Will you tell us what the financial condition of the organization is?

Anon. 5:19,

I have been on the board at the RME since before the election last year. The entity is a non-profit that is fighting the battle of making a go of it during its' initial years. The board, right now, has realized that changes need to be made to reduce overhead and to give the RME an opportunity to hold its' own. It really came down to the numbers - costs can't exceed revenue.

River Roots Live was a success on numerous fronts, but the attendance could have been better and that hurt the bottom line as well.

Lon Bozarth has helped lead this venue and show a vision for what live music can mean and do for a city and those efforts will be missed.

The RME will focus on educational opportunities and the Redstone Room, two efforts that have gone very well. Hopefully, the recent developments will help the organization re-position itself to build toward a more viable future.

I believe the RME is a great venue and fills a void from a cultural amenity standpoint. I, personally, love music and nothing is better than enjoying it live and at a top-notch venue. The RME has always offered this and the board hopes to continue this trend for years to come.

Sometimes a fresh perspective (new members) is good and I think that might help the board.

I have tried to help out the RME whenever possible, on my board position, from volunteering to donating financially or offering services. Many on the current board have done more than I.

The board and the employees of the RME are trying hard to make this work, but numbers don't lie and numbers (ultimately) drive the decision making process.

This is my perspective, one of many on the board, and not someone that serves on the executive committee.

Have you ever seen the RMEs financial records. What do they tell you about what shape the RME is in?

Anon. 8:23 am,

The executive committee, which I am not a part of, delves much farther into the financials than the board. This is the committee that makes recommendations to the board. The new measures, put in place, are geared to make the venue viable. I will say, without the changes, it would be tough to make a go of it. Hopefully the new direction will make for a healthier financial position. I hope the community continues to support the educational initiatives (like River Currents) and the Redstone live music performances.
